Malcolm Wallace commenced his professional career with British Transport Hotels in 1954 as an apprentice cook, and went on to become the Assistant Marine Catering Manager for Sealink UK Ltd.
In the intervening period he worked in Switzerland, the Merchant Navy and the National Health Service.
An active Trade Unionist, on his return to the transport industry in 1970 he joined the TSSA and has represented the TSSA at the Annual Trades Union Congress and the South-East Region TUC. He has held a number of lay offices within the union including that of Divisional Council Secretary, Chairman, Scrutineer and Trustee.
Chairman of the Chelmsford Trades Union Council for thirteen years, in 1979 he wrote its history Nothing to Lose - a World to Win. Malcolm has participated in many local campaigns and has represented the Trades Council on several bodies. Nominated by the South-East Region TUC, he served as a Governor of his former College - Westminster - for nine years.
A member of the Communist Party of Great Britain from 1965 to 1991 when it was dissolved, he then became a founding member of Democratic Left. He is a member of the Co-operative Party and the Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society's Education Committee.
Malcolm has several other interests, and in 1955 he helped to form the Loughton Rugby Football Club. A keen athlete, he has competed in several World and European Veterans' Championships and in his spare time enjoys needlework and classical music; he relaxes to classical music.
