First West Buses Strikebound in Pay Dispute
On a 70.6 % turnout (126 people balloted), 92.1% (89) of members voting voted for strike action.
Union members employed as controllers and instructor/ trainers were balloted for industrial action when the company’s response to their pay claim failed to address concerns about differentials with drivers which have been eroded in successive years.
Manuel Cortes, TSSA Assistant General Secretary said :
“Our members are not renowned for their militancy. However, they have had enough of putting-up with scraps whilst watching other groups of workers getting the real deal.
“Sadly, this result could well mean that the bus network will be brought to a standstill in most of west London. We have advised the company that our members will be participating in Industrial Action from noon on Sunday 27th August for 48 hours until noon on Tuesday 29th August. Further to this we have also advised them of additional 24-hour action from noon on Thursday 31st August to Friday 1st September 2006 and from noon on Thursday 7th September 2006 until noon on Friday 8th September.
“However, there is still time to avert this stoppage. I challenge First Centre West to seriously engage in delivering a long-term deal that ensures decent wages for all bus workers. We will also be calling on the Transport Commissioner, Mayor and Assembly to use their influence to bring a swift resolution to this dispute. It is only fair that all bus workers get a fair reward for their hard work. Regrettably, if this is not forthcoming, then buses coming to a halt may well become the norm.”
