TSSA criticises long wait for Potters Bar verdict

Commenting on the verdict that points failure was to blame for the Potters Bar tragedy, Gerry Doherty, general secretary, said:

"It is an absolute disgrace that the families of the victims have had to wait eight long years to find out who was responsible for the deaths of their loved ones.

"And the bosses of Jarvis(the collapsed rail maintenance group) should hang their heads in shame for prolonging the families suffering by claiming in the immediate aftermath that the accident was down to vandalism.

"This proves once again the folly of rail privatisation whereby the pursuit of profit was placed as a higher goal than passenger safety.

"Rail maintenance is now the responsibility of Network Rail and the sooner the new government recognise that is a publicly run company - rather than a private one - the better."
