Staff set to join company boards

Staff at First Great Eastern are to have the chance to elect an Employee Director to the company’s board.

The First Group has a policy that each of its companies should have an employee director, so First North Western is also due to hold an election and First Great Western is likely to follow suit.

TSSA supports the concept of companies having staff on the board, and Negotiations Manager Garry Norman has written to members at First Great Eastern explaining what the company intends to do.

The union does have some reservations about the plan, as the new employee director will not be allowed to hold any formal role within TSSA or serve as a staff representative or health and safety representative.

Garry said: I’ve told the company that we believe there’s no conflict between being an active union member and being on the board, but anyone who’s interested in standing can rest assured they will not have to give up their union membership or the rights that go with it.

First Great Eastern is writing to staff with details of the ballot, which will be conducted by the independent Electoral Reform Society.
