Formed in 1897 as the National Association of General Railway Clerks, it became the Railway Clerks’ Association in 1899; then, in 1951, following the changes that took place in the transport industry during the post-war period, the current title was adopted.

The TSSA has a campaigning history of which it can be justly proud. Its struggle for recognition, the role it played in the 1926 General Strike, its relationship with other transport unions and the contribution members have made to the Labour, Trade Union and Co-operative movements in Britain and Ireland are fully recorded, as is the union’s reaction to many important industrial and political events that have taken place in both countries during this century.

It chronicles, in some detail, the contribution of its women members and the union’s pursuit of equal pay. International links, along with social and sporting activities have played an important part in the Association’s development and these, too, are graphically documented.

Single or Return also outlines the changes that have taken place within the transport industry since 1897 and the way in which the union and its members in the Palace of Westminster, Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann have responded to these developments and influenced legislation in their respective nations.

The full contents of Single or Return have now been published on this website - this is a first for a UK-based Trade Union.
