Under Government plans rail fares will rocket by 24% over the next three years, with an increase of 6.2% this year alone. We say 'enough is enough'. Profit taking and fragmentation mean hundreds of millions of pounds leak out of the railways every year. Instead of making passengers and taxpayers pick up the bill for the disaster of rail privatisation, Ministers should be looking to build an integrated public transport system accessible to all.
With ticket prices due to go up at a rate higher than inflation for the next three years, the railways are at real risk of becoming the 'rich mans toy' that Tory ministers have talked about. As an interim measure TSSA calls on the coalition to implement the policy the Lib Dems fought the election on - for fares to be adjusted by 1% less than inflation every year.
