The economic crisis, falling living standards and rising unemployment are leading to a rise in racism. Migrants, black, Muslim and traveller communities are wrongly blamed. The recent guilty verdict in the Stephen Lawrence case represents some justice after 18 years of campaigning by his family, but racist attacks and murders remain a reality in Britain.
The English Defence League, which has engaged in street violence and anti-Islamic campaigns, have contributed to this environment. The last decade has seen the highest votes polled for a fascist organisation, the BNP, in British history. The EDL will now join with former BNP members to promote the British Freedom Party, a new fascist political party which will aim to exploit this racist climate.
UAF’s national conference will bring together anti-fascists, trade unionists, faith groups, black, LGBT communities, disability organisations and students to campaign against the far right and turn out the anti-fascist vote in the London and local elections this May.
