- I am pleased to be able to advise that two out of the five representatives constituencies have been filled and Arriva Trains Northern have been advised.

- TSSA members have overwhelmingly rejected the proposals for restructuring station and retail staff. Only 5 members voted in favour.

- The RMT has chosen once again to issue a circular on station and retail restructuring which makes misleading and dishonest comments about the TSSA, comments which cannot be left unchallenged.

- A ballot is being run to determine whether or not the proposals as they now stand are broadly acceptable and ballot papers will shortly be sent to members. A brief outline was set out in Circular 320 dated 14 July 2003.
- Restructuring hits the buffers - 14 July 2003
- ATN station and retail staff have been telling Steve Elrick and Jon Cheshire that the proposed restructuring package is not acceptable. The general view is that there are insufficient gains to be had from the proposals to justify changes to existing terms and conditions. Very few indeed have said that they would vote for it.

- TSSA’s first rail strike in 30 years was ’solid’, as members gave the industrial action their full support. If there was any doubt about the will of TSSA members to stand up for themselves, it has been well and truly dispelled.

- As TSSA members in Arriva Trains Northern’s Fleet organisation will be aware, TSSA was excluded from negotiations which led to the restructuring of most Fleet grades. Following the introduction of restructuring, clerical and P&T staff were then ’reorganised’, and were effectively forced to accept posts with restructured grades.

- TSSA has submitted the pay claim. There is no indication as yet as to when talks will take place, but we am pressing the company for an early date. Members will be advised of the date as soon as it is arranged.

- Following the failure of the restructuring talks for station and retail staff, we have met with TSSA reps to consider how the issue of pay can be progressed. It was decided that the outstanding pay talks for 2001 should be started at the earliest opportunity, and that a claim for an increase in pay of 40% should be put to the company.
