2011 Management Staff Pay Claim

The first meeting to discuss the 2011 pay claim for management grades with a 1 July pay anniversary has now taken place. During this meeting the Company made what they described as a "full and final" offer of 3.5%.

In response to other elements of the claim, the Company gave a number of commitments, including the possibility of further discussions on harmonisation of management grades, and on our concern that management staff are frequently expected to work excessive unpaid overtime. An additional day’s leave will also be granted for the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012.

Your negotiating team expressed our disappointment at the offer, especially as all other staff have received a much more favourable 3-year settlement. In addition to this, both Driver Manager and Conductor Manager grades will now receive lesser benefits than the staff they manage as a direct result of recent harmonisation agreements covering Drivers and Conductors. We stressed our concern that once again, managers were being made to pay for more generous increases elsewhere within the Company, while at the same time being expected to give their continued commitment and support. We reminded them that this was unsustainable and incompatible with a situation where managers believe they are being treated by the Company as second-class citizens.

The Company agreed to consider these points and have subsequently offered further discussions with Driver Managers and Conductor Managers on the particular grade-related issues above. So far however, there has been no movement on either the amount or duration of the offer. We will continue to press the Company on these matters and update you in due course.
