2011 Pay Claim

27 April 2011

Your negotiating team had its first meeting with the Company on 19 April to discuss your pay claim for 1 January 2011. The claim was submitted in November 2010, and was intentionally uncomplicated in an effort to reach agreement as early as possible to avoid the protracted discussions of last year. Unfortunately, the fact that it is now mid-April and a settlement is still outstanding does little to inspire confidence that this will be the case.

In response to our claim for a substantial increase to basic pay and allowances, the Company outlined its position that the pay budget increase for TCS was “up to 2%”. Your negotiating team rejected this as completely unsatisfactory and gave a number of examples where recent settlements elsewhere in TCS and the wider industry were in excess of this figure. With inflation running at much higher than predicted levels, and the cost of many essentials such as food and energy costs increasing at higher levels still, the opening offer falls short of our expectations.

We also stressed our extreme disappointment that once again members were having to wait for their pay increase to be finalised. The Company apologised for the delay and stated they wished to improve the working relationship with TSSA going forwards. Your negotiating team welcomed this and have always been willing to work constructively with the Company. However, it takes more than words to re-build trust and confidence and we wait to see what action the Company proposes to address this.

A second meeting has been arranged for Monday 16 May, at which we hope to receive a revised offer from the Company. A further report will follow in due course.

Meanwhile, please give your feedback on the above to your staff reps prior to the meeting on 16 May. Please also discuss the contents of this circular with your colleagues, and encourage any non-members to join. The more members we have, the stronger our negotiating position becomes. Membership application forms can be obtained from your TSSA reps. Alternatively, call the membership hotline on 020 7529 8018 or join on-line at www.tssa.org.uk
