Action for Rail: Beeching Anniversary Actions - 27th March

22 March 2013

Get involved I am writing to all members about the TUC’s Action for Rail (AfR) National Day of Action and to ask you to hand out postcards to commemorate the publication of the Beeching Report in 1963.

Why are we doing this?

We want to draw attention to this anniversary because the current Coalition Government has plans to take an axe to parts of today’s railway. The AfR Campaign, of which TSSA is a part, wants to make the case to passengers at railway stations about the effect of cutting ticket offices at smaller stations alongside issues stemming from removing guards from trains and withdrawing vital support staff.

Job losses – it could be you

The TUC estimate that in total – allowing for other recommended and planned staff cuts – as many as 20,000 jobs could be cut from the industry based on the recommendations of the government’s McNulty Report, the Initial Industry Plan and the Rail Command Paper. And all of this against the background of massively hiked rail fares that allow TOCs to gain ever greater profits.

The Plan – passenger action

Our plan for 27th March is that passengers taking the postcards will be able to participate in an e-action that involves writing to their MP to ask them to oppose the cuts to staffing and the impact on local communities.

Over to you – at a station near you

AfR’s Website has a list of stations where the rail unions and community partners will be handing out postcards to passengers. Simply enter your postcode and follow the instructions. Or, you can contact me at It really is over to you to do something on Wednesday 27th March – don’t just stand still and let others do it for you – get involved – make a commitment today.
