Back the Blacklisted Workers Ten Years On - Cortes

19 February 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has renewed calls for justice for blacklisted workers after a supporters group said it was preparing to make public 'important new information'.

The move comes ten years after the exposure of a covert organisation secretly vetting workers in the construction industry.

In February 2009 officers acting for the Information Commissioner ran to ground the Consulting Association which for decades – on behalf of major building firms - had run a blacklist of union members in the industry.

A major scandal was exposed and TSSA was the first union to call for a public enquiry.

The news came to light on the 6th of March that year. Now to mark that anniversary the Blacklist Support Group (BSG) says ‘important new information will be put into the public domain’ a special meeting in Parliament on Wednesday 6th March.

Manuel Cortes said: “That the BSG has new information shows that this scandal has not gone away, far from it. I welcome more light being thrown on the outrageous blacklisting practices which for so long blighted the lives of workers, often union members who had done nothing more than rightly raise safety concerns.

“Blacklisting was a secret tool used against workers who had no idea their details were being checked and no way of seeing whether the information held against them was at all accurate.

“It was an operation going back three decades which involved not only the top building firms, but the police and security services. Those blacklisted workers are still fighting for justice and justice they must have.

“What began as an industrial relations issue has very much become a human rights conspiracy involving multinational companies and the police.

“Reparations and apologies must be made. This must never be allowed to happen again in any industry, and we must have full disclosure. As Trade Unionists we will never stand idly by and allow exploitation or blackmailing to take place.”

The Blacklist Support Group 10th anniversary parliamentary event takes places Wednesday 6th March (5pm - 7:30pm) Houses of Parliament, Westminster.

It will be hosted by: John McDonnell MP & Chris Stephens MP. The date marks exactly ten years since The Consulting Association blacklist of union members in the building industry was exposed.

All blacklisted workers and supporters are welcome.
