Balfour Beatty Rail Plant Rail Grinders Christmas Working

18 November 2014

TSSA recently had a further meeting with Balfour Beatty Rail Plant to discuss the working of the Rail Grinding team over the Christmas period.

The TSSA emphasised that the staff concerned had never worked over the Christmas period, and that their contract of employment actually stated that they must save annual leave to take over this period. The TSSA clarified that for the Rail Grinders they saw the Christmas period running from 1800hrs on 23rd December 2014 to 0500hrs on 5th January 2015. Balfour Beatty stated that they had nineteen shifts from 19th December but with some of those being the Speeno machine, they saw at present five shifts impacting over the Christmas period.

Balfour Beatty made the following offer to volunteers to work over Christmas:

· Christmas & Boxing Day starting qualifying time, at or after 1800hrs on 24th December to finishing by 0659hrs on 27th December - double time, a day in lieu and a bonus of £350 per shift worked.

· New Year’s Day starting qualifying time, at or after 1800hrs on 31st December to finishing by 0659hrs on 2nd January - double time, a day in lieu and a bonus of £350 per shift worked.

· For the other days within the period after starting at or after 1800hrs on 23rd December to shifts finishing by 0600hrs on 5th January, delivery shifts at normal time, a day in lieu and a bonus of £100 per shift worked. Travel shifts at normal time and a day in lieu.

Balfour Beatty also made a commitment to get every employee home and they would not pick the cheapest option to suggest accommodation during this period. Lieu days would be entitled to be taken within one calendar year from 1 January to 31 December 2015.

In answer to TSSA questions about what grinding Network Rail required over the Christmas period 2014, we were advised the Birmingham area 22nd, 23rd and 27th December and 3rd January. The Woking area 3rd January and a transit from Welwyn Garden City to Newbury for the Basingstoke area 2nd and 3rd of January. TSSA representatives will be canvassing the views of our members before our next meeting with the company.
