Democracy and Rights for Zimbabwe

7 April 2011

Members will be aware that recently Zimbabwe has experienced increased levels of violence and intimidation, as a result of speculation that elections will be held in the coming months.

ACTSA (Action for Southern Africa) will be campaigning with a number of high profile activities to ensure that the terrible violence of the 2008 elections is not repeated, and that any future elections should be free and fair. ACTSA, to which TSSA is affiliated, has asked us to help publicise the following event:

Monday, 18th April: 31st Anniversary of Zimbabwean Independence
(1pm – 2pm, Zimbabwe Embassy, 429 Strand, London WC2R, OJR – nearest tube: Charing Cross)

ACTSA will mark the anniversary of Zimbabwean independence with a lunchtime vigil to highlight and call for an end to the escalating violence and will also call on the government to ensure that any future elections are free and fair. Messages will be placed in an anniversary card and presented to the Embassy by trade union and civil society leaders. The vigil will include trade unionists, diaspora groups, campaigning NGOs and other civil society organisations. Members are asked to support this event.

Details of other events will be advised in due course .
