Don't airbrush Scotland from LNER

25 June 2018

On the day public sector company London and North Eastern Railways (LNER) begins running the East Coast line, TSSA Leader Manuel Cortes castigated Transport Minister Chris Grayling for ignoring the importance of the railway to Scotland.

Cortes said, “Obviously the new name is an appeal to nostalgia for some mythical “good old days” but it ignores the fact that the East Coast line is essential for the economy of the Scottish Highlands and vital for Scottish passengers travelling between Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and London.

“The reality is that LNER has over 300 miles of route that runs on Scottish track yet there is no Scottish voice on the board of the new public company. And to add insult to injury Scotland has been airbrushed from the name! It just shows the entrenched little Englander mindset of the Westminster Tories.

“Scottish passengers deserve better than to be treated with contempt by a failing Transport Minister. Time for Teresa May to say enough and get rid of him. And it’s also time for Ruth Davidson to show whether her loyalties are truly with the Scottish people or not and add her voice to ours and Humza Yousaf’s demanding a seat on the board of – and a name change for - the LNER.”
