Eurostar: 2017 Pay Referendum

We have now received written confirmation of the full and final 2017 pay offer from Eurostar following a further meeting held last week. The offer is for a phased increase to basic pay and job related allowances to a level above inflation. The offer also increases the home to work travel allowance above inflation, introduces an enhanced overtime rate for front line operational staff, and includes a review of some important policies and procedures.

The full detail of the offer is as follows:

1. Pay Increase

  • From 1st May 2017, an increase of 1% for basic pay and job related allowances will be applied to all relevant employees
  • An additional increase of 2.2% will then be applied for basic pay and job related allowances from 1st November, 2017

2. Home to work travel

The current level of cash allowance (currently a maximum of £1375) will be raised by 3.2% as from the 1st May 2017:

  • 100% of the first £1000 to be claimed as a cash allowance – currently £1000 increased to £1032
  • 50% of the next £500 to be claimed as a cash allowance – currently £250 increased to £258
  • 25% of the next £500 to be claimed as cash allowance – currently £125 increased to £129

Nothing to be claimed on the remainder of the price.

Total cash allowance to be claimed (subject to tax and NI) – currently £1375 increased to £1419

The current calculation method for shift workers and part time employees remains in place.

3. Overtime premium

The recent business reorganisation and resultant changes to rosters in operational front line roles should be efficient enough to minimise the need for overtime across the business. Additionally, any overtime is on a voluntarily basis. However, it is proposed that a premium of x1.5 be applied to all hours above contracted hours for employees volunteering to carry out overtime working at management request. The usage and control of overtime working will be subject to local management arrangements. This arrangement will be in place for front line employees at UK stations, UK on-board services, TMI, ECC.

4. Joint Reviews

To explore improvements and greater consistency of application of processes, we will jointly review the following policies:

  • Sickness and absence
  • Equal opportunities and diversity
  • Family friendly/flexibility

The terms of reference for each of these reviews to be agreed at Company Council.

5. Next Pay Review

The date for the next pay review will be 1st May 2018.

 

The pay discussions were particularly difficult this year, with the Company stressing the negative effect of terrorist attacks on its finances. Their expectation was that the situation would improve in the latter half of the year; hence the phased nature of the offer. Against this background their opening offer was exceptionally low, and this position was maintained throughout the discussions, during which offers of multi-year deals with below inflation deferred increases and one-off non-consolidated lump sum payments were made. These offers were firmly rejected, and your negotiation team continued to press for an increase which was fully pensionable and would protect you against inflation (3.1% for the period in question). Therefore, the fact your negotiating team has secured an offer where pay will have increased by 3.2% by November together with a 3.2% increase in home to work travel allowance and introduction of enhanced overtime payments is a remarkable achievement. For these reasons we believe this is the best possible negotiated settlement available at this time, and therefore recommend it to you for acceptance.
