Failing Grayling Sinks To New Low - Cortes

23 April 2019

TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes has described Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, as "sinking to a new low" after it was revealed he urged officials not to go public about a delay to the vital Preston to Manchester electrification project until after a Parliamentary debate on rail franchising.

The delay led to the botched introduction of a new timetable by Northern rail in Spring 2018 causing widespread and lasting chaos across much of the north of England.

The matter came to light after a Freedom on Information request by the Yorkshire Post. A senior official at the Department for Transport told rail industry leaders last January (2018) the Secretary of State wanted to wait until a after the Labour-led Commons debate before going public with news of the delay.

Commenting, Manuel Cortes, said: “This really is Failing Chris Grayling sinking to a new low and simply goes to show that Conservatives are happy to put politics before the interests of the travelling public.

“This amounts to a cover up of how badly Failing Grayling’s mismanagement of our railways has been. He is the most incompetent Transport Secretary I have ever known and his disastrous stewardship knows no bounds.

“He’s not fit to run a bath and anyone with any decency would have resigned long ago. This debacle is just another clear signal that we need a public railway, owned by the public for the public and we need it now.”
