First Great Western Management de-recognition

1 June 2015

As you may be aware, FGW terminated the collective bargaining agreement with TSSA from 4 May 2015. Despite this, members should be assured that TSSA will continue to represent managers in FGW.

TSSA welcomes the fact that FGW has continued to deal with the union on a 'business as usual' basis following derecognition. The company is still consulting on organisational changes with TSSA's management staff reps, it has committed to working collaboratively with the union over the issue of workload and excessive working hours, and TSSA reps will continue to be involved in negotiations regarding this year's pay award for managers. TSSA is also taking up the concerns of Customer Ambassadors relating to them being asked to undertake additional duties including on-call.

Managers are of course still covered by TSSA's agreements with FGW relating to health and safety, and learning.

The company has softened its position regarding future recognition for managers, and seems to be taking the view that if managers want TSSA to represent them for the purposes of collective bargaining they will accept that. FGW clearly wants TSSA exercise its right under the law to pursue a formal application to a government body known as the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) for statutory recogntion, and the union intends to do just that. To maximise the chances of that application being successful, TSSA needs to recruit the majority of FGW managers, thereby returning the union to the position that existed two years ago before the company dramatically increased management numbers.

Members can play their part by discussing this matter with colleagues, and urging those not already in membership of TSSA to join. They can join on-line at http://www.tssa.org.uk/en/join-us/index.cfm

TSSA management staff reps are in the process of ensuring that they speak to as many manager colleagues as possible about the importance of TSSA membership over the next few weeks. Their contact details are shown below:
