Freightliner Intermodal Clerical Pay Update: Pay Talks 20th December 2016

21 December 2016

TSSA, with RMT and Unite, met with Freightliner Ltd on 20th December 2016. Freightliner verbally made the following pay offer for 2017 and 2018.

Year 1 (2017): 2.05%
Year 2 (2018): RPI minus 0.25% (minimum 1.0%, maximum 2.5% increase)

In our pay claim submitted to Freightliner, TSSA sought “a substantial increase in the basic rates of pay and other allowances that will lead to a material improvement in the standard of living of our members”. With the annual rate of inflation rising to 2.2% in November 2016, the offer from Freightliner is clearly below this. In September 2016, the Treasury published its latest “Forecasts for the UK economy: a comparison of independent forecasts,” based on outlooks published by 21 institutions. Looking forward to 2017, RPI inflation is predicted to rise to 3.1%.

Freightliner stated that this was their final offer; there would not be any increase in later negotiations. At the time of TSSA submitting our pay claim, according to “Company House”, accounts for Freightliner Ltd were overdue. The last accounts were made up to 28th March 2015. We have now been informed the latest accounts should now be available. I will check this.

We need your feedback on the pay offer from Freightliner. We can only represent you effectively if we know your views (and how deeply felt your views are) on this pay offer.

Is the offer acceptable/unacceptable for both years?

What kind of offer would be acceptable?
What length of deal are you looking for considering the uncertainty regarding the inflation rate in the next two years?
Should the offer be linked to other aspects of terms and conditions?
Are you prepared to take any form of industrial action if there is no increase to this “final offer”?

Please email me at with your feedback. The next Pay talks with Freightliner will be on 31st January 2017. Please let me know your views by 20th January 2017. Any questions please let me know.
