General Election 2011

21 February 2011

As is the practice of our trade union at General Election time, on behalf of our union members in Ireland, we wrote to Labour, Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael & Greens as the political parties who were most likely to return TD's to the Dáil in the upcoming general election.

In particular we asked for information around issues of Transport policy and proposals for semi-state organisations.

The following Parties responded to our letter:

  • Labour
  • Sinn Féin
  • Fianna Fáil
  • Fine Gael

The parties provided the following links to their policy documents:

Also additional link to information on Fine Gael policy concerning School Transport (page 15): http://www.finegael2011.com/pdf/LessWasteLowerTaxesStrongerGrowth.pdf

This election has generated significant interest amongst our membership. We would ask members to take the time to view the various political parties policy documents. We all now have a choice about the shape and composition of the new Government, about the policies it chooses and the priorities it sets. This election is a clear opportunity to ensure those policies and priorities reflect the needs and concerns of working people and their families. A focus on jobs and growth holds the key to real recovery.

Also please find below a downloadable leaflet, which the ICTU have compiled on the various responses of political parties to the issue of privatisation of state companies.
