General Secretary Announces Early Retirement

15 August 2011

The General Secretary has just this morning held a meeting of the paid staff in London. The meeting was called at very short notice.

With a heavy heart, the General Secretary reported that he had today advised the TSSA President of his intention to take early retirement and served the required three months notice that will see him cease his employment as General Secretary in November 2011.

Gerry first joined the Association in 1972 and apart from a short term of some eighteen months or so, when he worked outside the railway industry, was a member ever since. He served as a staff rep, branch officer, divisional council officer, secretary of a Political Advisory Committee and Executive Committee member during his time as a lay member.

In October of this year he will celebrate twenty years as a full-time member of staff, having served TSSA members in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales and indeed abroad.

A trade union is about it’s members, and the advice, help and support that Gerry has received in his time as General Secretary, paid officer and lay activists over many years from members young and old was not only gratefully accepted but also hugely appreciated. He also wishes to place on record his thanks to the very hard working staff of the Association for their support and comradeship over the years.

A personal email will be distributed from the General Secretary to members for whom we hold email addresses later today. Activists are asked to circulate copies amongst TSSA members.
