Govia Timetable Chaos Fine Is Meaningless - Cortes

14 March 2019

Responding to news the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) have issued Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) with a £5m fine for breaking rules on passenger information on its ThamesLink and Great Northern routes following the widespread May 2018 timetable disruption, TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes said:

“So the ORR claws millions back from Govia Thameslink for breaking rules on Twitter, but what comfort or consolation is that to passengers and our members who get no recompense for the chaos they were forced to endure?

“Worse still, with no government intention of changing the systemic problems that led to the timetable chaos, breakdowns are now endemic. So, this fine is meaningless and it simply recycles public money as GTR get handsome payments from our government.

“Only a radical nationwide overhaul of our privatised rail system will solve the rail crisis. Putting passenger service at the heart of our railways needs public ownership to ensure money is invested into the system not divested from it.”
