Grayling Must Come Clean On Rail Enhancement Projects

4 July 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has demanded Chris Grayling "comes clean" about a series of promised major rail enhancements after it emerged Network Rail is being gagged from disclosing the list of projects.

In February last year when Government funding was announced – more than £10bn was earmarked for design, development and delivery of enhancement projects. However – a list of specific projects is yet to be announced.

Network Rail head of client portfolio, Yaelle Ridley, told the New Civil Engineer Future of Rail conference she was prevented from sharing the list of projects by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and The Department for Transport (DfT).

Manuel Cortes said: “It’s really not a good look for Chris Failing Grayling – gagging Network Rail from even telling the rail industry what their money is going to be spent on.

Grayling may not have long left in the job, but he still has time to come clean and tell us what enhancements are going to be made.

“We are talking about spending public money and both politicians and civil servants should be accountable for their plans and held up to proper scrutiny.

“The rail industry is demanding to know what is planned and if this Tory government cares a jot about openness and transparency they will let us know without delay."
