GWR: Payment Arrangements for Sunday 1 January 2017

5 December 2016

Information on enhanced payments for all grades working on Sunday 1 January 2017 who commence work that day.

Offer Made by GWR

Following several discussions at company council around the merits of offering enhancements to colleagues working on Sunday 1 January 2017, GWR have very sensibly made an offer to enhance payments for anyone (all grades) commencing work on that day. That offer is as follows:

“At the Company Council meeting on 15 September 2016 the Company outlined the payment arrangements for Christmas 2016 as follows:

Designated substitute bank holiday arrangements for 25 December are covered in existing terms and conditions, and where applicable these arrangements will apply on 27 December 2016. Similarly, for those grades where 1 January is a bank holiday under their terms and conditions the substitute arrangements will be applied on 2 January 2017, and for all other grades normal working arrangements apply.

Having considered further the pay arrangements for 1 January 2017 the Company have decided to make an offer to pay all grades ½ time extra on current Sunday rates for all turns worked commencing on Sunday 1 January 2017 e.g. Sunday @ 1¼ (125%) will be paid at 1¾ (175%). For those grades that have Sunday inside the guaranteed week the ½ time extra enhancement will be paid on rostered and overtime turns of duty commencing on Sunday 1 January 2017. Please note that the additionally enhanced hourly rate only applies to turns commencing on 1 January 2017, normal working arrangements or substitute bank holiday arrangements (where applicable) apply on 2 January 2017 as outlined above.

You will note that these arrangements mirror what was previously agreed for Sunday 1 January 2012.”

As this offer makes reference to mirroring the previous working arrangements for Sunday 1 January 2012 we have included some important text from that offer for Management grades which is as follows:

“In addition this arrangement will also be extended to Management Grades (MS) that have rostered turn of duty commencing on Sunday 1st January 2012 and are required to work, and On Call Managers that are called out and attend the workplace. The enhanced payment for Managers applies to basic salary.

You will note these arrangements are comparable to those agreed previously for Sunday 2nd January 2011, with the additional improvement that it will now be applied to Management Grades (MS)”

TSSA Accepts the offer

After careful consideration your Company council representatives have taken the decision to accept the offer and I have therefore written to GWR accepting the offer on behalf of all TSSA members. We will need to wait for the responses from the other trade unions before we can confirm that these arrangements are in place but we hope to have confirmation in the near future.

Importance of strong trade unions

The very fact that we are able to get agreements like this is due to the collective strength of the Trade unions and is testament to why it is so important for you all to seek to strengthen our collective presence within GWR.

Please encourage your colleagues to join a trade union to help us build a better workplace together, if they need reasons on why to join then show them the video on this link https://youtu.be/1A-L8qpRwnk and encourage them to join TSSA online at www.tssa.org.uk/join
