Johnson & Hunt Freeport Backing Reveals Brexit Intentions

2 July 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has lambasted Tory leadership candidates, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, after they were accused of trying to turn the UK into a haven for tax evaders and money launderers.

Both men have indicated support for controversial freeports in the east coast of the UK - where no taxes or tariffs are charged on imports.

Freeports have been strongly criticised by the European Union for activities relating to tax evasion and money laundering.

Commenting, Manuel Cortes said: “As the farcical Conservative leadership contest rumbles on the Tory Brexit reality is becoming ever clearer.

“Both these empty vessel candidates have revealed their true Brexit intentions with their backing of freeports – they are trying to turn our country into a tax haven.

“To no one’s surprise the Tories and the alt-Right want us to leave the EU in order to create a totally deregulated low tax economy which would decimate the rights of working people and the economy at large.

“They must be stopped. Brexit is a looming disaster. We need a Labour Government now.”
