Labour NEC update on leadership election

20 July 2016

Following yesterday's (19/07/2016) Labour NEC, we have the following update.

The TSSA rail union warned it was considering legal action over the NEC decision to continue its ban on trade union members who joined the party after January 12 this year taking part in the leadership contest.

Manuel Cortes, general secretary, said:

"We are extremely disappointed that Labour's NEC has failed to overturn the unfair ban on some of levy paying members. Those who joined after January 12 aren't being allowed a vote in the leadership election.

"Yet Labour appears to be happy to take their hard earned cash but appears to be hell bent on denying them a voice.

"In our union, all our members are entitled to a vote from the day they join. There s no qualifying period.

"We will now consider what can be done to ensure our members are not disenfranchised. Sadly, this means seriously looking at seeking legal redress. That is the least we can do to overturn an unjust ban on ordinary working people."
