Labour tables motion in Holyrood supporting TSSA efforts to organise in Abellio contact centres in Glasgow

9 October 2018

Scottish Labour spokesperson for Transport, Colin Smyth, has this week laid a motion before the Scottish Parliament condemning the behaviour of Abellio for failing to sign recognition agreements with the TSSA in their contact centres at Robertson Street and Culzean House in Glasgow.

The motion also calls upon Scottish Transport Secretary Michael Matheson to put pressure as a supplier to the Scottish Government to engage with the TSSA in negotiating a recognition agreement.

Abellio is in receipt of a contract worth more than £7billion over ten years to run the ScotRail franchise.

The full text of the motion is below.

The motion

That the parliament welcomes the signing of a new recognition agreement between the TSSA Union and Abellio at their Contact Centre in Fort William; however notes with disappointment, that Abellio have yet to sign recognition agreements with the TSSA in their other two contact centres in Scotland, at Robertson Street and Culzean House in Glasgow, despite the TSSA’s attempts to negotiate with them; acknowledges that such action goes against the spirit of the government’s Fair Work agenda; recognises that this is particularly unacceptable when you consider that Abellio is in receipt of a franchise worth over £7billion over 10 years from the Scottish Government; condemns the behaviour of Abellio and reaffirms its belief that good industrial relations supports productivity and engagement in the workplace, as well as supporting wider social priorities, such as equality of opportunity, equal pay, health and safety, and learning and skills acquisition; calls upon Transport Secretary Michael Matheson to put pressure on Abellio as a supplier to the Scottish Government to comply with the Scottish Government’s policies on Fair Work by engaging immediately with the TSSA in negotiating a recognition agreement.
