LNER: Transfer of Fleet Engineering Staff to Hitachi Rail Europe

20 July 2018

We have today written to Hitachi Rail Europe seeking a meeting to discuss future arrangements for staff due to transfer from LNER Fleet Engineering under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings, Protection of Employment, Regulations 2006).

We are not aware of any formal meetings having taken place so far, but recent information received indicates that Hitachi may already have plans which may harm pensions in the long term. It has been reported that Hitachi are planning to allow all transferring staff to join a new section of the Railways Pension Scheme, but that this section will not be open to new entrants and nor will the majority of staff be able to transfer their past service benefits into the new section. This raises serious concerns over the long-term viability of the new section and the level of member contributions that will be required to sustain it. TSSA opposes any attempt to reduce your hard fought for pension benefit, and we are asking for a formal response from Hitachi as a matter of urgency. We will of course keep you updated of any developments.

If you have moved home or changed your contact and/or work details, you must advise us of these changes. This will ensure you receive important circulars and advice from TSSA. Please contact our Helpdesk on 0800 328 2673 to update or change your personal details, or log in to MyTSSA via the website.

If you require any further information on the contents of this circular, please contact one of your staff reps in the first instance. Please also discuss the contents of this circular with your colleagues, and encourage any non-members to join. The more members we have, the stronger we are. Membership application forms can be obtained from your TSSA reps or you can join on-line here.
