March for the Alternative, 26 March 2011: Advice to TSSA members

22 March 2011

Please note: Updates or changes to these arrangements made by the TUC will be posted at www.marchforthealternative.org.uk. Updates from TSSA will be posted at www.tssa.org.uk in the “Campaigns” section of our website.

For those with internet enabled phones, real-time information on the day is available via Twitter on the @March26March account and #march26 hash-tag.

Walkden House

Our TSSA office at Euston will be open from 08:30 to 11:00 for members to meet and storage for bags. Tea and coffee will be available. The office will be opened again for a period of time after the march for those who need to collect left luggage.

Assembly Point

The allocated assembly point for TSSA, RMT and FBU is in Zone 11 along the Embankment opposite Temple Underground Station. Do not use this station as it is likely to be closed for safety reasons. Look out for signs fixed to lamp-posts. Zone 1 is towards Embankment Station with other zones situated in ascending order eastwards along the river.

There are special distribution places near our zone where you can pick up your TSSA banners, flags, T-shirts and placards.

Unless you are arriving very early, we advise that members approach from the rear of the march (from the East / Blackfriars direction). Please follow the instructions given to you by the march stewards.

Due to the sheer scale of this demonstration, space in the TUC assembly area is limited to 50,000 – 60,000 people. Arrive early (before 11:00) to ensure you are able to march as part of the TSSA contingent. For safety reasons, union members arriving after this area is filled may be directed to another form-up area. If stewards advise you that Zone 11 is full, please do not attempt to reach the TSSA banner, join the march wherever you are advised and rendezvous at Hyde Park.

Stewarding

Route Stewards will be wearing orange high visibility jackets. Senior Stewards will be in yellow. TUC Deputy Chief Stewards will be wearing red.

All stewards are there to ensure that we all have a safe and effective demonstration. It is important that you obey all instructions given by stewards.

Transport

Please allow for delays. There will be major pressure on certain Underground lines so please plan your journey carefully. Check the TfL website (www.tfl.gov.uk) for updates.

A large part of central London will be closed to traffic for most of the day. Roads around the Embankment will be shut from as early as 09:00 hours. Please avoid Embankment and Temple Underground stations as these are likely to be closed. Blackfriars Tube is shut for refurbishment work.

Access and Disability

Special arrangements have been made for access at the main assembly point; those wishing to join the march on Piccadilly for a shorter route to the rally, or who wish to attend a static protest in Hyde Park, or go straight to the rally. Details of these arrangements can be found on the March for the Alternative website

Hyde Park Rally

The TUC estimate that the march will arrive in Hyde Park shortly after 13:15 and the rally will start around 13:30.

Because the TUC expect large numbers, it is estimated that people will still be arriving in the Park at 16;00 hours and possibly later. The TUC will therefore keep the rally running until around 16:30pm. Of course, not everyone who arrives early will want to stay through to the end – and indeed we hope that early arrivals will move to allow those coming later a good view.

In addition to the stage and giant screens in the park, there will be refreshment facilities and extra toilets.

TSSA will have a stall in the rally area which is being staffed by lay volunteers throughout the day. Some T-Shirts and other TSSA campaign materials will be available on the stall for those members who were unable to collect them at the assembly point.

TSSA Social Event

You are cordially invited to a post-march social event for TSSA members at The Square Tavern in Tolmers Square (at the junction of Euston St and North Gower St, near Walkden House). There will be a range of food and light refreshments available from 16:00 hours.
