Matheson should put nationalising ScotRail at the top of his agenda

27 June 2018

As Michael Matheson begins his first day in the job as Scottish Transport Secretary, TSSA leader Manuel Cortes urged him to put nationalising ScotRail at the top of his agenda.

Said Cortes, “For the last six months Humza Yousaf has been promising us an announcement on the future of ScotRail. The Scottish Government can’t be allowed to wriggle out of making a decision on the back of this Cabinet reshuffle.

“During his time as Justice Secretary Matheson did his best to force through the Scottish nationalisation British Transport Police with an unwanted merger with Police Scotland, wasting millions of pounds of public money in the process.

“But his brand of nationalism is exactly what’s wanted at ScotRail where frankly an independent Scottish public railway is just what’s needed to reduce fares and improve services.

“If he takes back the keys from Abellio for the Scottish people I’ll wave the Saltire at Waverley station to welcome him bringing ScotRail back home for the Scottish people.”
