Meeting with Department of Regional Development Transport Select Committee

27 June 2012

A TSSA and Unite the union panel had a full and meaningful meeting with the Department of Regional Development Transport select Committee at Stormont 13th June.

The Committee wished to discuss the impact Translink's Corporate plan would have on our members.

In his presentation TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes stated his biggest fear was job losses, above inflation fare increases and a reduction in the services provided to the public. Jimmy Kelly Regional secretary for Unite supported Manuel's concerns and placed some proposals to the committee.

The Committee then put a number of questions to panel and a frank debate followed.

The Select Committee appeared sympathetic and understanding to the point a view of the unions. They had positive views to preventing job losses and the other impacts the Corporate Plan may have.

Our General Secretary asked the Committee to seriously consider commissioning an impact analyses into the social, economic, environmental and commercial needs that would be affected by the proposed cuts to the subsidy.

The Committee assured the joint panel that they would give serious thought to the proposals presented to them and a joint written report should be submitted to them. They also agreed to further meetings with TSSA and Unite.
