MTR South Western franchise

27 March 2017

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes responds to news that Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has awarded another rail franchise to Hong Kong based MTR.

"However they want to spin it, this government's experiment with rail franchises is a busted flush. They don't deliver better services for passengers, they deliver higher fares for passengers who are milked as cash cows by the franchisee who are in the rail business in Britain to make money for shareholders not transform Britain's antiquated rail system.

"In the week the Tories are triggering Article 50 under the promise of taking back control for Britain, it is a national scandal that they are outsourcing yet another rail franchise to the control of yet another foreign company. Not until we take back public control of Britain's train operating companies, will we be able to to invested profits made in Britain here back into services, subsidies and rail network expansion desperately needed here. It's not a big, expensive or arduous task, we just just take need to them back, franchise by franchise, as they expire to start to become a self-sufficient rail state once again."
