Network Rail: Campaigning for fair pay - The money is there!

9 June 2011

As Network Rail threatens to impose a 2.5% pay award on its managers (distributed by the discredited PRP system), their website reveals that operating profits increased to £2 billion.

As Network Rail threatens to impose a 2.5% pay award on its managers (distributed by the discredited PRP system), their website reveals that operating profits increased to £2 billion. This story was reported by the BBC as equating to a pre-tax profit of £438 million (an increase of over 10%) see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13708317

No explanation for below inflation award

To date the company has not sought to explain why, for the third year running, managerial grades will receive a lower increase in their pay pot than the across the board increase for operational grades. The closest we have to an explanation is ‘the low market movement in salaries and the continued difficult economic circumstances’.

Clearly Network Rail has the money to pay our claim in full, and ‘market conditions’ have not affected their view of pay for operational grades (who will receive a guaranteed 5.2% this year and RPI plus 0.5% next year)

The money is there, yet Network Rail’s loyal managers are once again told that they will receive a below inflation increase if they receive anything at all, as the increase will be distributed by the unfair lottery like PRP system.

Negotiations update

David Higgins has yet to respond formally to our request for further talks, but his office has indicated that he will respond ‘soon’. We are hopeful that David Higgins will agree to meet with your union’s negotiating team and be prepared to listen and respond to the case for our pay claim.

However, if Network Rail does not agree to a meeting, then we will be forced to initiate a ballot for industrial action.
