NORTHERN: MANAGERS PAY 2018

20 November 2018

Your representatives are pleased to inform you that following yesterdays meeting with the Head of HR Operations we were in a position to accept an offer that not only meets our members expectations, but in some way goes to improve upon what we believe the majority of members were expecting.

BACK PAY AND SALARY INCREASES WILL BE IN PLACE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

Following discussions with the majority of our Management Grade members from all areas of the business, it has been made quite clear to your reps that achieving an acceptable pay deal prior to the next pay run was of paramount importance. This would ensure that new salaries and all back pay would be in place and made in the next pay round, i.e. prior to the Christmas period.

The only way that this could be achieved was if a deal was accepted almost immediately, any delay on acceptance of a deal would have meant that the pay increase and back pay could not be implanted in time for the next pay round.

Put simply we had been mandated to ‘get in there, get the deal done and make sure it gets paid as soon as possible’.

We are pleased to confirm that this has been achieved without compromising our position at all.

NOT JUST A PAY RISE

As expected, the offer mirrored that which was made to your non-management grade colleagues i.e. a 3.9% increase backdated to the 6th of May.

We also underpinned the deal with a minimum increase of £1200 (for FTE /pro rata for P/T) per annum, backdated to 6th May for the lower paid end of the Management Grades.

In addition, we got the following commitments from Northern that we would work together on the following;

·        Commitment that for 2019 management pay discussion will commence prior to anniversary date, adopting a broad approach on issues that may support equality, diversity and improving the gender pay gap.

·        Commitment to review the 2009 management harmonisation agreement.

·        Commitment to work with TSSA to explore a reduction in the working week. TSSA’s aspiration is to seek a maximum 35hr working week over a 5-day period. (It is worth noting that we recognise this as a long-term goal and not something that will be easily achieved – your representatives will endeavour to keep you informed of any developments)

Your negotiating team felt that the above offer not only meets but effectively exceeds our members expectations. Which alongside with what our members have been telling us in the run up to these discussions, left us in no doubt that we could accept the offer on your behalf.

We would like to thank you for your patience in awaiting this deal to be made. It has been as equally frustrating for ourselves, but the reasons behind the wait are well known and documented.
