Now Trenitalia gets a UK rail franchise

11 January 2017

Responding to the news that the Italian State-controlled rail company has just bought the c2c rail company from National Express.

c2c operates the London, Tilbury & Southend and East Thameside franchise

TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes said:"Transport Secretary Chris Grayling is not a man of his word. Like his fellow Tory Brexiteers he promised a vote to leave Europe would be a vote to take back control of  Britain.  But today we receive the news that another European government's rail company is to get a foothold in the UK rail market.

"The NHS isn't safe in Tory hands, neither is the UK's rail industry! Grayling refuses to take Southern into public control or let London Mayor Sadiq Khan's office take it over,  whilst at the same time now permitting Italy's public to own of our railways.

"Grayling is failing British rail passengers and taxpayers and Trenitalia now joins the state-owned rail companies of Germany, France and Holland who are all run chunks of the UK rail network.

"Let's face it, Grayling and his Brexit backing cabinet colleagues don't give a hoot about what's in the best interests of Britain's passengers and taxpayers. If they did, they'd stop our railways from being flogged off to the highest bidder and run them in the UK public interest, investing every penny made from rail here back into rail upgrades and passenger fare subsidies here."
