NTA plans to privatise 10% of bus services

12 September 2013

Plans by National Transport Authority (NTA) to privatise 10% of Dublin Bus and Bus √Čireann routes will be strongly opposed by the TSSA.

Privatisation no matter how much will have a significant impact on Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann’s ability to provide a proper nationwide public transport system.

The plans from the NTA target bus services in Waterford City, Cork, rural southeast services and parts of Dublin. The plan is to put out to tender commuter routes for operation by private companies in 2016.

The decision, which has been approved by the Government, comes after Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said the private sector had a role to play in the provision of public bus services

TSSA along with the other unions are engaged in a cost recovery talks with the two bus companies with a view of ensuring the viability of the companies. This government sponsored threat of privatisation only undermines those efforts and sours the industrial relations environment.

TSSA will be writing to the minister and Department of transport seeking an urgent meeting to raise our concerns and objections on these plans.
