ORR block on extra Virgin services proves case for HS2

31 July 2013

TSSA leader Manuel Cortes has commented on ORR's veto on Virgin running new services on the already crowded West Coast main line.

"This is proof positive that we need High Speed 2 to provide badly needed extra capacity on the West Coast line.

"By blocking extra services from Blackpool and Shrewsbury, the regulator has said what the industry already knows, the West Coast is now full to bursting point.

"The only way to provide extra services is by providing extra capacity throughout the whole network. And that means High Speed 2 from London to Manchester and Leeds via Birmingham."

The ORR in its ruling said there was insufficient capacity on the West Coast line to allow new services between London and Shrewsbury and London and Blackpool.
