Rail Campaigners in Glasgow and Edinburgh Monday 18th

17 November 2019

TSSA, ASLEF and Scottish Labour will be campaigning for Labour’s vision for the railways on Monday 18th November at two of Scotland’s busiest commuter stations.

The campaigners will meet at Glasgow Queen Street 07:30 – 09:30 and at Edinburgh Haymarket 16:30-18:30, stations at either end of Scotland’s busiest rail route.

Manuel Cortes, TSSA General Secretary said, “Earlier this year Scottish Labour – backed by TSSA and other rail unions – tabled a motion, urging the SNP Government to strip Abellio of the franchise by 2022 after it emerged that almost 75,000 ScotRail trains have been cancelled since the Dutch firm began running the franchise in 2015.

“The move not to extend the franchise was defeated after the SNP were supported by Tory MSPs despite the SNP’s own Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Matheson’s admission that “The existing franchise system…is no longer fit for purpose.”

“The simple truth is, Scotland’s passengers have been paying through the nose for third rate services for far too long. The SNP have sat on their hands and allowed Abellio to break their franchise contract again and again. Trains are too often late or cancelled, stop skipping is creeping back in and to add insult to injury ticket prices are still rising every year. Under Labour Scottish commuters will finally get the service they deserve with trains operated for passengers, not for profit.”
