Rail Regulator Making It Harder For Network Rail To Improve Performance

20 February 2013

Rail regulators ORR were blamed today for backing maintenance cuts which will make it harder for Network Rail to hit performance targets over the next five years.

The TSSA said 1,000 maintenance job cuts between 2014 and 2019 will make it harder for the taxpayer funded company to meet its 92% punctuality targets for trains arriving on time.

"We agree that NR must up its game if it is to meet performance targets set by the ORR and rightly expected by passengers, " said union general secretary Manuel Cortes.

"But by proposing cuts in maintenance of between 13 and 19%, the ORR are making those targets much more dfficult to achieve.

"The problems suffered by passengers in the South East over the past ten days because of power line failures will be worsened if these cuts go ahead as planned."
