Save our London Transport' Rally

20 March 2019

TSSA will be holding a 'Save our London Transport' rally outside City Hall to coincide with MayorÂ’s Question Time tomorrow morning (Thursday 21st March).

TfL faces unprecedented financial pressures arising from the Tory government’s decision to withdraw the operational grant of over £750 million each year.

This makes London the only major city in the world whose transport system receives no funding from central government. Meanwhile, TfL does not receive any of the road tax paid by Londoners but has to pay billions for road repairs.

The failure by private contractors to deliver Crossrail on time has resulted in additional costs and the loss of £600m in revenue over 3 years, with an extended delay possibly costing millions more.

TfL’s ‘Transformation’ (job cuts) programme has seen over 2000 people leave the organisation since 2016. TfL’s latest business plan proposes a further 30 per cent reduction.

The majority of job losses have occurred at lower grades, and there has been no equivalent reduction in the numbers of Directors. These massive cuts to permanent staff have left thousands of vacancies, and many have been filled by high cost consultants on day rates of over £1000.

TfL relies on consultants, at a cost of tens of millions each year. They do not appear on TfL’s headcount figures and are a way to circumvent headcount controls, introduced by Sadiq Khan in 2016, which apply to all other staff.

We are doing this with the support of the Labour Transport Spokesperson on the Assembly and London Assembly Members.

Where - We'll be meeting outside the entrance to City Hall - The Queen's Walk, London SE1 2AA - at 9am with a banner, and flyers to hand out to the public and those arriving to participate in or watch Mayor's Questions. .
