Scottish Government ferry contracts now subject to a policy review

3 February 2017

Responding to news that the tendering process for the Gourock-Dunoon ferry has been paused and future tendering for Scottish Government ferry contracts will now be subject to a policy review, TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes said,

"This is great news for ferry workers, highlanders and islanders and everyone across Scotland who campaigned so hard to keep Scotland's community lifeline ferry services in public ownership. Equal and just access to affordable and quality public transport should lie at the heart of fair and modern economy. And news today that the European Commission Teckal exemption ruling accepts that the particular geography and topography of Scotland means it should should not be left prey to the vagaries of the market to provide a reliable transport system vindicates those of us who have long fought to keep Scotland a beacon of integrated public transport.

"We welcome Humza's announcement that , finally, the SNP have been forced into the rethink unions have been pressing for all along. Humza must now stick up for public - or as we now seem to be pressing it - "in house" ownership rather than let this process be still further dragged out."
