Scottish Government Must Stop Dithering On ScotRail - Cortes

12 September 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has urged the Scottish Government to "stop dithering" and bring ScotRail back into public ownership "without delay."

The call comes after it emerged the SNP Government has drawn up plans to run the railways as an ‘operator of last resort’ if ScotRail's performance fails to improve.

Transport Secretary, Michael Matheson, said the current Abellio ScotRail franchise could be terminated if it fails to deliver on a remedial plan, put in place earlier this year.

Manuel Cortes said: “Our union welcomes the news that the SNP have finally heeded our advice to create an operator of last resort but Matheson and Nicola Sturgeon really must stop their dithering.

“There is a legal process required by the state if it is to take over the running of trains from a private company. The SNP seemed unaware of this when in the early days of the franchise it was clear Abellio were going to fail to meet their targets.

“Now the government have the right process in place, there is no longer a legal excuse for delaying taking back the keys and ScotRail services must be brought back into public ownership without delay.

“Nothing else will do because the whole of Scotland can see that this franchise has been a complete and utter failure on any measure.

“It’s time this Government put Scotland’s passengers first and ditched the failed privateers."
