Southern reinstates 5 services along new Transport Ministers' constituency

19 July 2016

Troubled rail firm Southern was accused by TSSA of showing "favouritism" towards new Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.

Union leader Manuel Cortes hit out after it was revealed that five of 15 lines reinstated on Southern's emergency timetable run through Mr Grayling's Epsom and Ewell constituency.

"It seems that the old boys network seems to be alive and well in the Surrey Tory heartlands. Southern must be really worried about losing its franchise to show such favouritism to the new Transport Secretary who hasn't really got his feet under the desk yet," he said

The services were reinstated after a review of the 341 service cuts introduced across the network last week. Southern denied preferential treatment saying their decision was taken before Mr Grayling's appointment.

The union is calling on the government to return the franchise to the public sector.
