STUC Annual Youth Conference

19 January 2011

The 71st Annual STUC Youth Conference will be held over the weekend of Saturday 25th June to Sunday 26th June 2011 at the STUC Conference Centre, Glasgow.

The Youth Conference is a key event in the diary of young trade union activists. The programme encompasses all the normal business of a Policy Conference, enhanced by special workshops and discussion sessions, and a range of social activities. The theme of this year’s Conference will be ‘A Voice for Young Workers’. Much of the Conference agenda will be aimed at promoting the Unions Work strategy to young members and engaging their support for the STUC’s campaign activities. This year’s Youth Conference has the potential to be an exciting and stimulating event which has the capacity to build the confidence of young members. This year’s theme will “A better Way for Young People”. I would encourage Branches to put forward nominations.

The Association is entitled to appoint up to four delegates to this Conference (at least one of whom must be a woman). Nominations are invited from young members who must be under 27 years of age by the date of the Conference. Branch Secretaries are asked to send details of the applicant(s) name, age and address, together with brief details of trade union duties undertaken. Nominations should reach this office by no later than Monday 7th March 2011.

Provision is made on the form (circulated to Branches) for the written acceptance of the candidate and this should be completed where possible. Where this is not possible the candidate must sign a letter of acceptance which should reach Head Office by the closing date for receipt of nominations. We are entitled to submit one motion of no more than 200 words. If you wish to submit a motion please e-mail it to] by Monday 7th March 2011.

It should be made clear to the candidates that such acceptance implies that if elected as a TSSA delegate, he/she will act in line with Association policy i.e. in accordance with Annual Conference decisions or, in the absence of such decisions, in accordance with the decisions of the Executive Committee or, in the last resort, and in the absence of guidance from the Executive Committee, in accordance with the judgement of the delegates as to Association policy.
