Tories still taking wrong track on rail

23 January 2012

TSSA slams Network Rail's plans to merge track and train management in the South East

TSSA leader Manuel Cortes said:

"The Tories made a huge mistake when they broke up British Rail into 100 different pieces 15 years ago and separated track and train management, the only country in Europe to do adopt such a bizarre policy.

"By joining up track and train again in only one region, they are making a dog's breakfast of what should be one unified industry, not a collection of jig-saw pieces owned by different private companies.

"Everywhere in Europe, there is one publicly owned rail network in each country. We should have the same here instead of having the the most over crowded and most expensive network in the western world."

He also wanted to know what safeguards would be in place to protect the taxpayers stake in Network Rail, a not for profit company that has swallowed £40 billion of taxpayers cash in the past 10 years.

"We do not want to see taxpayers cash going to South West Trains, owned by Sir Brian Souter of Stagecoach, one of the richest men in Britain," added the union leader.

"And we certainly don't want to see public assets like track, stations and signals passed to private companies through the the back door."
