Train ticket price guarantees

10 February 2017

Responding to calls for the Office of Rail and Road for Rail Ticket Price Guarantees, TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes said:

"Calling for ticket price guarantees will do nothing to end the fact that ticket machines along with the price tariff system are actually designed to milk passengers of their money.

"Ticket machines are difficult enough for people who are machine-savvy, but those who aren't, for our older folk, for those whose eyesight is not what it was, for disabled people and for those in whom machines just induce anxiety and panic, ticket machines are a source of great stress.

"Passengers should not be made cash-cows. Proper customer service and sound ticket advice will only come when you remove the privateers the vested interests from our railways. If the Office for Rail and Road wanted to make real difference they wouldn't be recommending this tinkering at the edges of a rotten system, they'd abolish it.

"Let's face it, putting the passenger at the heart at the heart of our rail service means you have to stop them being turned into the profit margin. That's why the only way to fix this system means taking rail back into public ownership which would also keep our stations and ticket offices soundly staffed."
