Travel costs at Network Rail yet another scandal of privatisation

22 May 2013

TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes has commented on today’s report that Network Rail is spending millions of pounds a year on business travel.

“It is one of the nonsenses of the privatised railway that Network Rail, the national rail infrastructure provider, has to pay private train operators in excess of £17m/year for staff travelling on business. It is a scandal that, when doing business, it is sometimes cheaper for Network Rail employees to travel by air than by rail. Prior to rail privatisation, business travel cost the railway industry and the taxpayer next to nothing, and the sooner the government acts to reverse this failed privatisation and the additional costs associated with the fragmentation of our rail network the better.”
