TSSA calls for enquiry into Saturday's chaos at Edinburgh Waverly

25 August 2019

TSSA has condemned yesterday's (Saturday's) chaos at Edinburgh Waverly as symptomatic of mismanagement at ScotRail and called for Transport Secretary Michael Matheson to launch an enquiry into the events.

Manuel Cortes, TSSA General Secretary said, “Yesterday’s chaos at Waverly is symptomatic of Abellio’s long-term mismanagement of ScotRail. Their policy of running staff down to the bare minimum and expecting to be able to cover with overtime and now by forcing our DTMs members to cover driver shifts leaves them vulnerable to industrial action like ours and sudden spikes in demand like yesterday.

“No-one coming home from Scotland’s capital should expect to experience platform overcrowding or to be squashed into trains like cattle at 23:30, Festival or no Festival.”

TSSA members in the Driver Team Manager (DTM) grade at Edinburgh Waverley are currently taking industrial action including not covering driver shifts in a dispute over their role.

Cortes added, “The SNP-run Edinburgh council is also to blame for allowing an international rugby match to take place in the city this weekend. It’s no secret that the last weekend in August is the Festival’s busiest weekend – it’s an English bank holiday. Anyone could see that an international rugby match would stretch public transport to breaking point.

“Transport Secretary Michael Matheson must call an enquiry into yesterday’s events to ensure we see no repeat performance.

“All credit must go to our members in ScotRail who under difficult and stressful circumstances did their best to get passengers home safely It’s a shame Abellio are more interested in profiteering than in matching their staff’s commitment customer service.

“We’re ready to suspend our industrial action, and help got ScotRail trains moving again, as soon as Abellio give us a cast-iron guarantee that our members will not be forced to drive trains.”
