TSSA condemns attack on peace demonstration in Turkey

12 October 2015

We express our utter condemnation of the attack on this weekend's demonstration for peace in Ankara, Turkey. We stand in full solidarity with the hundreds injured and mourn the loss of around 100 people killed in the attack.

Trade unions have been at the heart of the movement for peaceful reconciliation in Turkey, calling for a cessation of all acts of political violence. The recent resumption of the Turkish government's military campaign against Kurdish groups, coupled with an increasingly violent response to human rights campaigners and trade unionists, is a cause of great concern.

We offer our full support to those trade unionists and others working for peace and reconciliation between all groups and salute the bravery of those working for a fairer Turkey where the human rights of all are respected.

Many members of our fellow transport union, Birlesik Tasimacilik Çalisanlari Sendikasi, were amongst the dead. BTS, which represents employees of Turkish State Railway amongst others, has worked with TSSA as part of the International Transport Workers’ Federation. Their passing is a huge loss not only to the cause of peace in Turkey, but to all of those working for a world of justice where workers' and human rights are fully respected.
