Our Union Mourns the Death of Former President Dave Horton

12 August 2019

A widely respected former President and long serving member of our TSSA family, David Horton MBE JP, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, 10 August 2019.

Dave joined British Rail (BR) in 1960 and our TSSA family in 1964. He was an active member of our North Eastern Management Staff Branch, Chair of the Northumberland and Durham and also the Yorkshire Divisional Councils , Chair of the Standing orders Committee, Executive Committee member and National Treasurer of our union before being elected to our highest lay office as President from 1997 to 2001. Dave continued as an active member of our union, most recently as Secretary of the North East Retired Branch. As Treasurer and President of our union, Dave was at the forefront of the campaign against the privatisation of British rail and helping our members and our union address the problems that followed. There is little doubt that pre-privatisation, the Tories had plans to access the £4.25 billion contained within the BR Pension Fund. Dave was a key activist in the campaign that delivered the Railways Pensions Scheme in 1994 and which helped safeguard the rights and standards of living of subsequent generations of railway workers moving into retirement, rights which subsequent Conservative Governments have continued unsuccessfully to seek to undermine.

Dave was also a well-known and respected Labour Councillor in York from 1986 to 2015, serving two terms as Lord Mayor of the great railway city in 2002/03 and in 2011/12. In 2012, during his second term as Lord Mayor he hosted the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee Year when she visited the city for the Maundy Thursday service at York Minster. Shortly afterwards, he was made an MBE for services to the community.

Our deepest sympathies are with Dave’s closest family and friends, particularly his wife Jane.
